Description

The DS-1 Digital Marine Bottom profile Recorder was developed to fill an industry requirement to acquire depth and profile data of shallow marine bodies of water. The objective is to provide users with a comparatively inexpensive digital recording system that would allow acquisition of depth data at intervals of approximately 5 meters (assuming boat speed of 18 kilometers per hour or 9.7 knots).

The system using commercially available real time differential GPS positioning equipment and depth sounder provides depth data accurate to less than 15 cm (depending on sea conditions) with positional accuracy of less than 10 cm.

The system consists of a 12 channel GPS receiver and real time radio modem base station; transmitting RTCM corrections to the boat mounted positioning and navigation system. The real time differentially corrected positions are married with the depth data acquired by the depth sounder.  Each reading of the depth sounder (typically at one second intervals) triggers a position reading from the GPS system. Delays between depth sounding and position fix are less than 100 milliseconds.

Depth and position data are recorded in human readable ASCII format on a ruggedized NEMA standard water resistant portable computer. The system utilizes a version of the Microsoft Windows CE operating system. This provides methods to easily save, process and retrieve data.

The DS-1 Base Station unit consists of a 12 channel L1 C\A code receiver with narrow correlator technology, a 611 active, zero phase centre, single frequency L1, base station antenna, Data Radio   integrated radio modem and whip antenna.

The user must specify a known, fixed point for reference to the base station GPS receiver. The receiver then utilizes this reference point to calculate the differential corrections to transmit at regular (user specified) intervals to the mobile or rover GPS receiver.  As each correction is calculated it is automatically sent to the radio modem via serial port and transmitted. With proper antenna and positioning the base station can transmit position corrections to mobile receivers up 30 miles (50 kilometers away)

MOBILE BOAT MOUNTED PORTABLE SYSTEM

  • The mobile (boat mounted) part of the DS-1 system is comprised of a commercial depth sounding unit with colour display, transom mounted / removable 200 kHz transducer with 6.0 degree beam width, 12 channel real time differentially corrected GPS receiver system and a PC based data logger.
  • The depth sounder is configured as a 200 kHz system for shallow water depths (less than 250 meters). The unit can be user reconfigured for greater depths (up to 800 meters) but would require a change in transducers.
  • Data saved in Nonvolatile Memory (several days worth)
  • Dual storage media.
  • Powered from any 12-volt system.
  • Current is less than 5 amps peak.
  • The boat mounted system comes as three units for ease of transport / shipping.
  • High impact transit case:
  • Distribution Box
  • 12 VDC to 115 VAC 60 Hz 300-watt inverter
  • Power distribution box
  • Power supply
  • Data Radio   Radio modem
  • GPS receiver
  • Interconnect cables
  • High Impact transit case containing:
    • 200b-8B transducer assembly
    • Transducer mount assembly
    • GPS antenna and cable
    • Radio modem antenna, mount and cable
    • Miscellaneous spare parts
  • Human portable and can be mounted on wide variety of medium to large sized vessels (6 to 20 meters).
  • Easy break down into sub assemblies for ease of transport to different locations and install.
  • The system components are cabled with 15-meter cables and high impact corrosion resistant connectors.
  • With proper antenna and positioning the base station can transmit position corrections to mobile receivers up 30 miles (50 kilometers away)
  • Graceful Software Auto-recover from signal loss and cable disconnect.
  • Portable system is independently testable with SerDevSim.
