The NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) standards classify electrical enclosures by the amount of protection they provide. Type 4 enclosures are suitable for indoor or outdoor use. They provide protection against windblown dust or rain, splashing water and hose directed water. They are undamaged by external ice formation. To get a NEMA 4 rating an enclosure must meet hosedown, external icing and rust-resistance design tests. Type 4 enclosures are not intended to provide protection against internal condensation or internal icing. Type 12 enclosures are intended primarily for indoor use. They protect against dust, falling dirt and dripping noncorrosive liquids sucha as oil or cooolants. They must meet drip, dust and rust-redistance design tests. Type 12 enclosures are not intended to provide protection against internal condensation.
